Hey,

Ty for help.

Hello Gragouzy,

There are the following points to consider:
  • The Population is always limited to 5000
  • The more houses you have when below the limit, the quicker they grow.
  • Plains have higher population growth.
  • I think forests also have a good growth rate, while the rest are slower.
  • Population won't grow when food is lacking.
  • I think there are other modifiers, such as morale.
The Ch'Cht have higher growth rates than any race.
In DL2 you can research cloning and increase population artificially.

In DL1 playing single player, you can use a cheat to increase population.

Thank you Tggtt for explanations. I will adapt my base and test the cloning.

I just need to point that "house populace" doesn't increase population.
It basically allows you to define how many won't be working.

This answer only pertains to Deadlock 1, could be different for deadlock 2

Food does not affect population growth at all. You can play Cyth without any food and still grow your population as fast as any other race except the Chch't. I posted the following elsewhere as part of a larger post:

Population grows according to the following formula: (2 - population/max population)*(territorial rate)
If Chch't multiply by 1.5, all rates are rounded down

Territorial rates:
Plains: 6%
Forest: 5%
Swamp: 2.5%
Mountains: 2.5%

Having more available space helps your growth, and it is also a percentage rate, so more citizens in a given territory helps overall growth.

I recently confirmed what sdu754 describes above: with Cyth, you can run 0 farms / 0 food production. The food shortage hurts morale - which Cyth ignore. I tracked population growth before and after reaching 0 food, and saw no change in growth rates in grasslands, swamp, or forest.

I'm finishing out the mission now. It makes Cyth much more interesting! The 1/5th loss of population to 80% morale has always kept me away from Cyth. Now that I know they need 0 farmers, the Cyth have an advantage early on despite the morale penalty. There's also the income benefit from oppressive taxes.
