I'd like to introduce myself

Hi Guys
My name's Rob and I was first introduced to Deadlock by a colleague of my mothers when they used to have 'happy hour' on Friday nights. Also played StarCraft and Netstorm late into the night (I was about 10 at the time, awesome!)
A bit of a craving for the game took me about 6 years ago and I found a copy on eBay but quickly grew tired of it, that's the teenage years for ya. I've had the box lying around my bedroom for that long and decided to give it another go in the last couple weeks and been enjoying it immensely. I found Gallius IV from a link on Wikipedia and the clincher for me to join up to the forum was seeing UberGeneral was from Perth - the other side of the country, but still, it's a small(ish) world, hey 8-)
I'm a Ch't-Ch't/Human fan, because the two things that hinder me most are early population and mid-late game economy

Hi Robdog, welcome to Gallius IV. At least we can sympathise with each other, over Australia's lack of Netflix! :)

If population is an issue, here's what I do. Build 3 housings (not Apartments or Luxury Housings) on the first turn and don't put any colonists on them. They will build in 1 turn and cause the population to grow quicker and earlier. They will then upgrade to Luxury Housings over time, giving the maximum population of 5000. This won't work for DL2.

For money, try and build an Airport, Shipyard or high level Factory, early on for Trade. Higher level factories will create more trade, but upgrading Airports and Shipyards will negatively affect trade. Try and build a museum to keep morale high, then adjust the tax rate to the highest point were it won't affect morale. The more Culture, the higher you can tax. If you need any more help, I will be happy to give it.

Welcome, hope you enjoy the site. Ubergen G pretty much nailed the technique for getting off to a good start, at least for human colonists, which I prefer. Keeping morale and taxes high is very productive! I often have several shipyards that I do not let upgrade.

One warning I would give though, you don't want the population to grow too fast in the beginning, if you are playing without Fast Production. You simply won't be able to grow enough food, so it might be worth only building one housing on the first turn, in this situation and building more a little later, once you have enough farms. But if you are playing with Fast Production, you should have enough food to support a fast-growing population.

I hope Rob doesn't mind me hijacking his thread to say hi myself (it seemed a logical place to put the introductory posts). It's less messy than starting a thread myself that'll echo most of what'd go in here anyway.

My real name is Matthew and Deadlock was part of my childhood too. Many fond memories. Unlike others previously posted, I found the site while Google searching for the old thread featuring the Deadlock-Alpha Centauri mod. Imagine my surprise (and that of the many other fans) to find a budding fansite in the making, long after games of that generation have fallen into obscurity. I applaud the effort, it'll make a most fine shrine for nostalgia.

And personally, I can't stand having un-upgraded buildings, even if it's an unnecessary drain on the energy.

Hi Matthew - welcome to GalliuIV (those recruiters have something to answer for don't they)!

I guess that there are significant, if not insurmountable, hurdles to seeing Deadlock re-released. However, one can imagine a version on the iPad being immensely popular.

You will no doubt find the reminisces of those involved in Deadlock's creation interesting. This was a big-budget game for its day ($1M). It would be wonderful if all of the artistic and creative talent that went into creating the original could see light again.

Recently remembered about Deadlock and have been spending a few days recollecting all my memories about the game let alone the fun I had. Deadlock is one of my childhood games that I loved. So much so I almost had to play it before I went to bed.

Quick Summary of how i forgot about Deadlock: lost CD, found, lost, download from friend.

Hi folks! I'm rather happy I ran into this site!

I started playing Deadlock when I received a demo in PC Gamer Magazine around 1996 - I was 13 - so any demo was a big deal. I got hooked to Deadlock immediately and played it quite often up to 2001. In the last 2 years, over summers, a buddy of mine and I have started playing quite frequently.

The problem is that I have been living in China for the last 3 years and he still lives in the US. We are struggling to find a way to do network games well. (I had success with Hamachi once, but I can't seem to make it work now.)

As a teenager, I played probably all of the races except Uva Mosk and Cyth a lot, though I don't know if I really understood the need for some resources or taxing so much back then. Now, since I play with a very competitive friend, every turn needs to be carefully thought out, so planning research, when to get tridium rolling, etc has become very important.

I prefer to use Maug now, but have been trying to look at the other side of production and research by using the ChCh't. I don't know the fastest time to Time Dilation, but I think I can get it in around 37 turns with Maug and about 45 with ChCh't.
