Groundbreaking!! Now I have my own farm

Post by Tggtt »

I know you expected this to be offtopic, but it's not.

After the decoding efforts, we also need a few encoding efforts.
Then, I've edited the farm picture (because it's plain, easy to edit manually and looks nicer than a simple construction site) using a text editor after dumping the image to a plain file (XPM) and then writing it back to SPRITELG.DAT using the hexeditor.

(Yes, it's tiny, but what did you expect? It was a pixel art using a text editor...)

It took longer than expected but I can assure you that it was not shopped. You can expect a tool solution in a few weeks.

Lets celebrate! This could be the first ever edited Deadlock sprite.
First edited SPRITE*.DAT screenshot result.

FAQ:
Why didn't you use png or gif like the first decoders? Why didn't you use a graphics editor?
Because I couldn't maintain the same palette when using them, if you change their order or miss a single colour, the whole thing may go wrong and these formats/tools were doing that. I have a plan to cope with this limitation soon.

Research project accomplished!

I've written a sprite loader. Now it's possible to load any image into SPRITELG.DAT and SPRITENW.DAT as long as they keep their sizes and the palette.

Refer to the decoding wiki for the following updates and how-to's.

So its possible to view all of the internal graphics now? I'm curious if any unused structures, units or tech graphics might be hidden in there. Hope you post what you find! :D

Hi Belix!

The only unused DL1 (common to DL2 demo) graphic I have found is this:
Probably Related to Transportation Strike

The only DL2 graphic that I have never seen ingame is this:

Details on internal structures are being documented into the Decode Wiki.
Browse the Decode Wiki

The graphic export tools are available within the OpenDeadlock Project.
Decode Tools Sources

DL2's GUI graphics are inside CAM files and we don't have specific tools for that yet, but they are data aligned and can be seen using GIMP's raw importer (but it appears upside down and we don't have the colour palette for that). We have not found anything useful or interesting from there, they look like screenshots but the changeable area is blank: Yes, if you think deeply about it, it's kind of a misuse of disk space to store large blank areas....

If wish to see more sprites, please try our sprite tagging tools. (available online)
You can search several sprites, looking for secret graphics while helping the OpenDeadlock project.

News here.
OpenDeadlock Knowledge Gathering link. Currently hosts sprite tagging tool and game.

Also, I forgot to post the DL2 sprite that I have modified by using the same tools.

i've seen the sunk sea platform...you can also make it ingame, by giving 'town center' ( or 'attack building'? don't remember) target to planes or rockets (perhaps also ships? dont remember) when attacking the platform. you will destroy it like a juggernaut tarth does.

Hello members,

Have you ever seen these tiles? They are not predicted by the DL2 Map Editor (and consequently, OpenDeadlock's DL2 map importer)

I have nicknamed them spring tiles, because they look like some sort of water spring.
I don't know if that's the actual name.

They are available in DL2 (Full and Demo versions) only.

I'm pretty sure these are rough tiles on a volcanic world with an incorrect palette. The crater tiles in both games' sprite files are still a mystery though.

Wow, awesome! Congratulations Tggtt!

I remember those buildings from Age of Empires II :P

By the way, I've never seen the sunk sea platform, nor those wasteland tiles

Do you mind if I provide a reference to your OpenDeadlock project on my(Our) Fandom Wiki?

Also, if any of you have spare time and would like to improve our fandom wiki (Look at my signature), I can give (And would feel really happy by the way) Admin rights to anyone interested. It makes things easier, like upload pics, messing with codes, alter the Wiki visual and so on. Please leave me a message if you are interested.

Thank you!
