I think you might be overly focusing on population early on. I always play of fast production because it speeds up the game, which I like.
Turn 1:

Humans are the best, because they are human. ;)
But also, money is the most difficult resource in the game. Population growth is a close second. But with the right starting strategy, population growth is taken care of.

The ChCh't do have a built in morale advantage when it comes to overpopulation. They have double the overpopulation limit. They are less affected by it. The only disadvantage that the Maug have is that they recover lost morale slower than other races. Outside of the Cyth you can only recover 10 ...

If you modded the game to increase housing capacity you might have inadvertently changed the coding for morale for overcrowding as well. I have never noticed any advantage to having excess housing once you reach the 50 population limit. I will test this out however.

But I enjoy the Maug personality more than the others, the way they complain their way through every activity is amusing! If research could be "carried over" from one project to another, Maug would be more powerful early on. Later, their research bonus becomes powerful against lower tech ...

General race attributes: Cyth. Really like their gothic nature and interesting character design. Noticeably easier to play in DL2 because museums require a 3-turn upgrade period, one cannot satisfy overpopulation penalties of swamps/mountains, and demand 10 energy. HATE this change from the ...
